Coaching is extremely rewarding.
Coaches are crucial to sport and physical activity in Wales. They play a vital part in ensuring that people are attracted to sport, enjoy sport and remain lifelong participants.
Coaches are needed at all levels throughout sport/physical activity, from beginners to elite performers. Whatever the level, the coaches' role is invaluable in creating the right environment to provide people with the best possible sporting experience, which will ensure continued participation through to adulthood.
Recruiting
The first thing a new sports/physical activity club will want to do is recruit a coach(es). Finding new coaches can be hard but spending time on this will be extremely worthwhile as a coach will often commit many years to a club. Clubs have traditionally recruited from ex-players of the sport/activity, PE teachers and parents/carers or young people within the club who show an interest in getting involved in coaching.
It’s important that when trying to find an appropriate coach that the club outlines the benefits to them. It can provide coaches with a range of new skills which can be transferable into other areas of life, making it good for their personal development and career opportunities. As well as that it's a great way to still enjoy a positive role in sport/physical activity and keep active. It's often easier to recruit two volunteers at the same time to share the workload and to help each other and learn together.
