4 Key Volunteer Roles:

Managing your club will be the responsibility of the volunteers. These volunteers make up a committee.

4 key volunteer roles:

The important roles for a new club will be:

Chair:

The Chair is the figure head of the club.

A Chair may have been appointed as Chair of the club or as Chair of the meeting. Their role is to oversee the business of the meeting and to keep order amongst the members. They will have overall control, give direction, and keep focus and structure. Their ultimate responsibility will be to take decisions on behalf of the committee following consultation with the members.

Secretary:

The Secretary is the nerve-centre of the club. The Secretary is the main administrative officer and provides the link between the members, the committees and other partners, e.g. other clubs, leagues, the National Governing Body, Local Authorities, the local community and the media.

The Secretary is normally the first person that an outsider would contact for information or for details about membership, training, meetings and activities.

This is an important role and is vital to the successful organisation of any club - if this job is not done well the club may cease to operate.

Treasurer:

The Treasurer is the main person responsible for the finances of the club and must work closely with other members of the committee. The Treasurer is responsible for collecting membership fees, paying bills and keeping financial records. The person needs to be well organised and completely honest.

Welfare Officer:

It is good practice (and for more and more sports/activities, mandatory) for clubs to have a Welfare Officer in place to make sure that the club provides a safe and friendly environment for everyone. The main duties are to make sure that the welfare policy and procedures are understood and followed by all members – whether old or new.

More information can be found within the Welfare section of the website.

Check with your National Governing Body for further information specific to your sport/physical activity.
