Sports Development is about building partnerships in order to provide appropriate and accessible sporting opportunities for all. The partners involved in sports development range from local authorities, schools (primary and secondary), colleges/ universities, clubs, governing bodies of sport, community clubs and services, leisure centres, specialist sports facilities and the sports coach UK.
Sports Development Officers (SDO’s)
SDO’s work to implement the National Governing Bodies and Local authorities’ sports strategies, sports coaching and development programmes. SDO’s may have a generic role and be responsible for developing a number of focus sports and developing active links with local agencies including clubs, schools, colleges and leisure centres as well as with national organisations. Other Sports Developmetn Officers are sport specific and work only with one sport.
Sports Development Officers are often the catalyst for ensuring that quality opportunities are accessible from grass roots through to performance and excellence programmes.
Contact your Local Authority or National Governing body to access the relevant information relating to your needs.
Dragon Sport Officers
Dragon Sport is a Sports Council for Wales initiative funded by the National Lottery, designed to offer 7-11 year olds fun and enjoyable sporting opportunities. Liaising closely with schools and community sports clubs, Dragon Sport is making a dramatic impact on sports participation by encouraging children to become involved in a variety of organised sporting activities.
Dragon Sport introduces children to coaching, skill development and appropriate competition using versions of the adult game, modified to meet their needs and skill levels.
